Going to senior year without any AP, but with 4 scheduled next year and GPA of 3.9, am I in disadvantage?
I’m taking AP Calculus BC, AP econ/government, and AP computer science. My SAT is above 2000 and every Sunday, I teach Bible study at my church and once a year, I volunteer as the church’s counselor for the kids’ summer camp. I want to go to UC San Diego? Having not taken any AP’s until senior year put me in a disadvantage? THANK YOU for replying! Your time is very much appreciated!!!
Well, unfortunately, since you didn’t take more APs, global warming is going to get us and puppies will become extinct…
It’s obvious that you are smart, smart, smart… and you know it. We all have moments of doubt, but think about your successes and remember that hard work and dedication will get you there.
I can’t tell you about UC SD’s admissions, or about whether that’s the right place for you… that’s beyond our control. Just keep being yourself and the rest will work itself out.
That said, here are a few tips of the more concrete variety:
1. Stop worrying about APs & start working on your personal statement essay for the application. Think about other essays too, involving, for instance, your favorite extracurriculars or sports, your summer experiences or your best academic moments. Talk about times when you encountered, faced and overcame struggles. Talk about how that changed you as a person, and why you would be a good fit at the college. Keep your meaning understated though, be subtle and discrete with your point. Use symbolism, imagery and metaphor. Have lots of drafts and run your essay ideas past the yahoo answers board! I’d say that at least one essay of yours should point in a given career direction, but don’t be too specific.
2. Get good grades in the classes you take.
3. Study for and get good grades in the SAT II subject tests; choose your
4. Cultivate relationships with 2-3 teachers/mentors who will be able to write fantastic recommendations for you.
5. Have fun and enjoy every minute of life!!! That will come across on your application and many different schools will see you as hot commodity because you will be a great fit on their campus!! Good Luck!
