Have you ever built, or at least lived in, an A-frame cabin?
I am thinking of building one, and wonder how cheaply I can do it, if I do a lot of the labor myself.
Although I really love geodesic domes, and the kits are cheap, it would be still too expensive to construct and finish. So, I’m thinking of a small-to-mid-size A-frame.
What was your A-frame experience like? Easy or hard to build? More or less expensive? Any thoughts would help.
A-frames are more labor intensive to build, of course, but if you’re doing the labor that isn’t a big factor. You’ll need plenty of scaffolding, which costs. You could buy some used scaffolding and then sell them upon completion instead of paying rental fees. Head room is an issue when you get close to the angled walls. Installing the drywall, tape, bed, texture, etc. is more labor intensive. The roof installation is definitely more expensive labor wise. Most have lots of glass in the two ends which is expensive and your heat rises creating A/C issues. Personally, if I was looking for a cabin, I’d go with a more traditional log cabin look without the logs. This is especially true if you’re working by yourself. I just built a 12′ x 24′ cabin with a 8′x6′ front porch almost entirely by myself. Contractors let me salvage cut boards and boards with nails in them for free. In a few weeks I had plenty of framing material. All I purchased was the plywood for the floor, roof decking, siding substrate, siding, paint, and shingles. Door and window company gave me some old windows and a door for free. Finished space with window a/c cost me $2,500.00 on pier and beam. That’s cheap, but it’s designed for an easy build and use of materials.
