Has anyone visited Guadalupe Mountain or Carlsbad Caverns National Parks?
What was it like? How long did you stay? Any info on camping?
I’ve been to both parks. Camping in Carlsbad is permitted only in the backcountry and it doesn’t sound like you’ll be doing any backpacking. There are campgrounds in Guadalupe Mountains and you can find out more about them on this web page – http://www.nps.gov/gumo/planyourvisit/camping.htm. Guadalupe Mountains NP is just 35 miles southwest of Carlsbad Caverns NP so that’s an option.
I stayed at a motel in Whites City at the entrance to Carlsbad Caverns NP. The first evening we drove up to the caverns to see the bats as they emerged from the cave. There are about 400,000 bats that call Carlsbad Caverns home during the summer. The best viewing times are July and August. When the weather gets cooler the bats migrate south. If you’re an early riser you can also watch the bats return to the cavern in the pre-dawn hours.
There are a number of guided tours offered and a couple of self-guided ones. We did the self guided tour through the natural entrance and went all the way down to the Big Room. Carlsbad Caverns is a must do experience.
We also did some hiking in Guadalupe Mountains just to get a feel for the park. It’s more of a backcountry experience kind of park. Unfortunately we weren’t there for backpacking but still enjoyed the park during a day hike. If you only have time for one park then you should see Carlsbad Caverns. If you have time for both, Guadalupe Mountains is worth a visit. Watch out for rattle snakes.
