dogs act out when owner is gone.?

my boyfriend left for Marine Corps boot camp 2 weeks ago. Now his 9 month old german shepherd is getting into the cat box, he ripped the floor mat a little, and today he clawed up a fire place tile and dug a hole through the floor. He didn’t do any of this before. he is very well behaved, VERY well trained! so it has nothing to do with whether or not he is trained good-until his daddy left for boot camp hes been acting out. do dogs usually do this when owners are gone for a long period of time?

I don’t know about usually, but dogs get very attached to their person and his person is gone. He’s suffering some anxiety. I don’t know how long your boyfriend will be gone, but the best solution is for you to work on a bond between the dog and yourself. In my experience, the best way to do this is to work with the dog. Take him to an obediance class. I know he’s probably already gone, but it gives you an opportunity to work with him. GSDs are workers. They thrive on commands. He will begin to see you as his person (and I doubt that will tarnish his relationship with your boyfriend when he comes home) when he begins to work with you. Hope this helps.
