How long does tinned food last?
There is no expiration date on a heap of tins in my pantry and I can’t remember what I bought recently and what I bought years ago! All are supermarket tins, some are fruit, some tomatoes, some soups etc – none are showing any damage or rust.
Also I’m assembling an emergency kit for bushfires etc and want to put a couple of tins of soup etc in it. Any thought on what tins last longest and provide best meals over a camp stove with only water to add?
Thanks particularly Maryn – I hadn’t thought of the packet food idea. And nope here in Australia we have tough food laws but no dates on tins or ven codes – what is with that (I feel another question coming on). Keep ideas coming – so far I’m impressed!
Many canned/tinned products last for an extremely long time, 40 years or more. Most of the canned goods I buy have no expiration or best-used-by date.
If the cans show no dents, no bulges (big danger there of toxins–discard unopened), and no rust or signs of leakage, you can assume they’re safe to eat.
Almost any condensed soup would be fine over a camp stove, but working on the assumption that weight matters, you might be better choosing packages over tins. For the same weight in box or backpack, there’s a lot more meals (soup and more) you can carry, needing only water to prepare them.
Let’s hope you never need to use them in an emergency.
