how realistic are the boot camp scenes in Full Metal Jacket?
can a drill sergeant really open hand smack and choke a cadet the way he did? not to mention all the racial slurs he threw at them. and how all the troops took a shot at Gomer Pyle with a bar of soap leading to him going crazy… great movie though.
He is called a drill instructor and they are called recruits..
And yes in those days they very well could and did hit recruits..
In todays Marine Corps no striking of recruits is allowed..They do use some racial slurs and if a recruit needs to be motivated to perform better than so be it..
And yes the movie did capture the intensity that goes on during Marine Corps boot camp..It is the most accurate film ever made about boot camp..
