i think the best campground close to the central coast is Lake santa margarita I have seen every wild animal in the state there except a bear and a mountain lion I swear… at or just before dusk everything is on the move. at least 30 kinds of birds and 4 kinds of birds of prey, ground birds as well, grouse, quail and turkeys, the biggest huge buck deer I ever saw and a herd of a hundred deer, coyotes, bobcat, skunks, squirrels, rabbits, chipmunks, possums and raccoons. They have hot showers, a pool, fishing, hiking, bike riding, obviously wildlife watching and only 30 miles to san luis obispo. Excellent in every way! and the stars oh my God the stars at three in the morning when all the camp lights are out…simply heavenly……
