Camping Safety Bears

Safety in camping with BEARS?

I’m really asking this for my daughter :)

As I have heard/read from time to time “don’t leave food out”, etc., I got to thinking. Do these bears just casually come aroungd in the night and rummage around? What if you then need to get up and go to the bathroom while they’re rummaging? When I asked a state park person about the danger of the bears, she said “if you don’t keep any food in your tent, you’ll PROBABLY be OK”!!! PROBABLY?!! I’d hate to come home one kid short. Can on have a hand gun (45) for such situations? What is the general attitute about and frequency of problems with bears?

We’re tent camping in the Colo. Rockys this summer.

Thanks!! Dave

they saw to lock your food in a big metal box, ot hide it up in a tree. that seems like a bad idea, because now the only meal on the ground is YOU. and i think you’d need more than a 45 to take down a bear. they’re huge.
