John Sterling was an elderly prison employee working in the prision mortuary. He was assigned an assitant, Raymond Spaulding, a recent addition to the prisoner population. He help John build the caskets, dig holes in the cemetary, bury the priosoners, you know, the typical stuff you’d expect to do working in a cemetary.

John wore glasses and desperatly needed a new perscription. He applied for medical assistance because he could not afford the new presciption, at least, not on a prison undertakers salary. He could barely see with his current set of specs.

One day while John and Raymond were building a casket, the mail man dropped off the day’s mail. John immediatley saw a letter addressed from the state, a response to his medical assistance request for new glasses. He went to reach for his current pair so he could open the letter and they fell to the ground. Raymond said “Oh, don’t worry. I’ll get it.” Raymond stepped on and broke the glasses.

John was distrought. At least before he had his outdated perscription and could see a little. Without his glasses, he could hardley see a thing. Raymond said “Don’t worry, I’ll read the letter.” While looking at the letter, Raymond could see that it clearly said the state would pay for the new prescription. But Raymond lied and said “I’m sorry John, they denied your request.”

Distrought, John sat down and put his head in his hands. “What I’m I going to do now?” John said. Raymond told John that he had been plotting an escape attempt and told John if he’d help, he’d give him more than enough money to buy a new pair.

Reluctantly, John listened… “Here’s my plan.” Raymond said. The next time a prisoner dies, I’ll crawl into the casket and wait to be burried. Later that day, you come and dig me up and I’ll give you how ever much money you’ll need.

The next evening, the mortuary bell rang and Raymond climbed into the casket. He felt the pallbearers carrying him to the cemetary and burring him.

Minutes went by… hours went by… he started to have a hard time breathing and was wondering where John was. Suddenly he remembers he has a book of matches in his pocket. He strikes a match… And he see John the Caretaker! The very person who is suppose to dig him up and set him free.

Raymond screams at the top of his lungs… but when you’re six feet down, no one can hear you.
