Question about bears and camping?
My wife and I are planning on taking a week long hiking trip on the Superior Hiking Trail in northern Minnesota the second week of May. As we will have our food with us (most of it will be dehydrated and sealed), I was wondering the best way to store it at night to keep it away from crafty raccoons and curious bears. I have read about bear vaults, but dont really want to carry that along with us. Is my only option putting our food in a stuff sack, tying a line to it, and throwing it up over a branch, hoisting it up and tying off the end with a rock of some kind? Does anyone have any other suggestions or is this truly the best method to twart outdoor critters? Thanks!
As a Minnesota camper myself, buy a Duluth pack, and hang your food from a tree. Make sure that you bring the freezer Ziplock bags to store any unused portions of food. This really is the best way to do this. By the way, make sure that you bring plenty of fire starter stuff, because the wood will still be wet, and VERY difficult to start. We just went up a couple of weeks ago, and had a hard time getting them started.
Good luck, and have lots of fun!
