Ideas on a cheap version of a VW surfer mini van thing for me and my bf to go camping with ???

Me and my boyf live in the uk and have just got into surfing.. but we live by Chester and so would have to travel down south and to Wales a lot.
We love those VW camper things (the hippie ones) but know they cost like 6000 pound at least. What kinda van could we get for a much lower budget to basically put a bed in and travel round in?? Like as cheap as possible cause we are students! :O) We also are pretty crap at mechanics.. lol
Any ideas muchly appriciated! Would a normal cheap van do the job with a bed?? Would I buy it from autotrader?? :O)

p.s. petrol cost i guess is a factor too due to milage
just any van will do, not going to be as cool as the VW, but hey
something like a cheap and cheerful transit would do, depends on how picky you are…….
you’ll pick one up at the prees auction on a tuesday afternoon or a thursday night (it’s about half an hour away down the A41, head for whitchurch, don’t turn into the town, keep on the 41 and you’ll see it on your right.
