How To Select A Water Filter Cartridge
There are different types of water filter cartridges to choose from on the market and each one fits a different system and filters for different particles. These are water filter replacement cartridges that can be used in refrigerator water and ice making units, water pitchers as well as water filtration systems that filter higher quantities of water.
Water filter cartridges can come in multi-cartridge packs, which are usually less expensive than buying a single cartridge at a time. Water filter cartridges can range from five dollars up to twenty or more, depending on the type of cartridge and the amount of time the cartridge is supposed to last before replacement.
Types of Cartridges
The most common types of cartridges are those that are made for absorption types or water filtration systems. These cartridges are filled with carbon or granular activated charcoal, which is the substance used to absorb the contaminates in the water.
These cartridges are great for absorbing chlorine, which causes a bad taste in the water, as well as removing or reducing other particle matter or organic matter such as pesticides. These water filter cartridges can be found in pitcher types of filtration devices as well as in refrigeration units for the water and ice maker.
Another type of water filter cartridge is the micro filtration or particulate filter. This type of filter is also used in pitcher devices as well as water and ice makers in refrigerators. This water filter cartridge removes particles from the water such as sand, bacteria and pathogens. It is also used in portable units such as are taken on camping and hiking trips to cleanse that type of water.
Reverse osmosis water filter cartridges are another type of water purification system replacement cartridge. This type of filtration device can be found in more advanced units that serve to purify larger amounts of water.
They use a thin membrane that has microscopic holes in it that only allow water molecules to come through it. That way it cleans out chemicals, metals and minerals from the water supply. These types of water filter cartridges are found also in portable units in addition to refrigeration units for water and ice.
Water filter cartridges have to be replaced on a regular basis, according to the manufacturer’s specifications. If they are not replaced regularly they can become clogged and not function properly anymore. Some clogged filters can even release more toxins into the water, making it more impure than it is unfiltered.
