How do I filter/purify contaminated breast milk?
My wife and I went on a backpacking trip in northern Colorado while our four month old daughter stayed home with her grandparents. While camping, my wife pumped breast milk and stored it in bags, which we kept cold in an icy mountain stream.
On the last day, we noticed that stream water had leaked into the outer bag holding all of the smaller breast milk storage bags. We assume that the outside of the bags are now contaminated and some of the milk may be also.
Is there a way to filter giardia/cryptosporidium from breastmilk? Can we boil it? Or should we toss all of that liquid gold?
You can’t filter it. Never take a risk with your child’s health. After all, your child’s health is the reason she is giving her breast milk. Your wife’s body will produce more.
