How is it that with so many garage door openers that people can have one that no one else has ?
Modern garage door openers and remote controls use an electronic security system. This means that every time you press a button on a remote control, it sends a different security code as part of the signal. Only the electronics in the overhead opener and the electronics in the hand held remote control “know” which security code/combination to expect next. Because all of the security codes are generated electronically, the manufacturers are able to have the system choose from several billion (with a “B” !) possible codes each time the button is pressed.
This “rolling code” system is more secure, because it keeps a potential criminal/burglar from using electronic equipment to “grab” a code. In the past, during the “little switches in the remote control” era, this was fairly easy to do using basic electronic equipment available at your local Radio Shack. With the modern rolling code systems, since the code changes each time, if a person were to grab a code and then rebroadcast it to try to get the door to open, nothing would happen.
Also, the rolling code makes the chances of your remote opening a neighbor’s garage door virtually impossible (1 in several billion). Even if it were to happen once, it would still be virtually impossible for it to happen again.
Chamberlain/LiftMaster/Sears Craftsman “Security Plus” openers, Genie “Intellicode” openers, most other openers by Wayne Dalton, Linear, etc. all use the modern rolling code technology.
