When the Saxons of the West Hampshire became the center of the kingdom of Wessex, and many Saxon kings are buried Winchester. A statue in Winchester welcomes the strong and powerful King Alfred, who has brought stability to this region in the ninth century.

Hampshire played an important role during the Second World War because of its large port of the Royal Navy in Portsmouth. The military camp at Aldershot and the Military Netley located in Southampton, as well as its proximity to the series of military training on Salisbury Plain and the Isle of Purbeck.

Supermarine, the Spitfire architects and many other military aircraft are all based in Southampton, which led to severe bombing during the war. Aldershot remains one of the main British Armys sustainable camps. Farnborough is the main basis of the Royal Air Force.

The name was changed to County Administration County Southampton County of Hampshire, on 1 April 1959. Hants stands its name, which is normally used in addresses in the Domesday Book of 1086 it shrunk to Hantescire.

Traditionally, the island of Wight has been treated as a part of New Hampshire for some functions, but it is now administratively independent for over a century, won a county council by its own in 1890. In 1974, the island became a part of Wight County in a full ceremony. Distribution services, except for police and health and had no formal administrative links that share the island of Wight and New Hampshire. While many organizations still see Hampshire and the Isle of Wight collectively.

The towns of Bournemouth and Christchurch are also in the former county of Hampshire and traditional. They were delivered in Dorset, the local government reorganization in 1974.

Portsmouth and Winchester cities offer the highest offices in the country and this which has drawn travelers to the cities. However, Southampton has won the largest number of jobs it provides and the floating population has become too high.

Traditionally, most rural areas of New Hampshire have been dependent on agriculture, although the county was less reliable on agriculture before the majority of counties that surround it and has been most people concentrate on milk production. The real of agriculture as an employer, the employee and the manufacturer of wealth has declined since the early 20th century and agriculture currently employs 1.32% of the total population.
