How I can get the melted plastic from a stainless steel fire?

Surprised I could not find the answer to this question yahoo answers so here I am asking everyone if they know how to remove the plastic film (yes, it should have been retired) stainless steel around a fireplace. Because the fire has used the plastic has hardened and bubbles, so it is no longer possible to remove it. I know that some products would be too abrasive, so I was wondering if anyone had a similar problem and had a silver bullet. Thanks J

Heat gently with a plastic hair dryer and use fine steel wool to remove. (Fine steel wool is used to "polish" the majority of stainless steel for a "mate" final.) If it is a shiny finish, may have to "polish" epilogues with a polishing compound.
