Building Better Paragraphs

All writing requires creative thinking and technical skills. At the other extreme, the technique has the mechanics of writing, such as knowing how to apply punctuation and grammar. On the other creative side, it must develop new ideas and stories. The combination of these two instructions involving the reader deeply and effectively communicate their ideas, the two parties. This synergy between creativity and technicality is most evident in the paragraph. Whatever the type of writing you produce, you must pay attention points.

1. Basic Components Section

Consider the two basic elements of all paragraphs, then look how they can use for effective writing.

a. The idea: A paragraph = one central idea. Has anyone ever said: "Hey, you have a good point there"? Well, that's what your paragraph. Just now point, which is the central idea this paragraph. You might think that is the purpose of paragraph. This single point of a paragraph can be supported by several other ideas, and the paragraph by itself, can be written to support a more comprehensive, but its goal remains the same. It appears as a way of expressing an idea complete the drive.

b. Support: Paragraphs should be both internal and external support to the central idea. Support Outside: how the central idea paragraph is connected to the ideas before and after this section. (This is called using external because it gives a reason for the central idea is expressed.) Another way to describe what we mean by "outside support" is The way of linking the paragraph context. domestic support is how the content in a paragraph is connected its central idea. By analogy, think of the branches of a tree. The central idea is the branch. External support is the main trunk, and domestic support is the growing leaves branch.

If you extend this analogy a bit, you see how the branches (ie, ideas) are connected. Some passages are quite long, and that the purpose of this analogy, the author chose a large branch that has small branches growing from it. Some are very short because the author chose the smallest branch identification. In both cases, however, the paragraph has the internal and external support.

Since this article refers to what happens in the paragraphs, we will assume the idea is clear and focused on the support – what happens inside a paragraph. How the media internal and external work express the idea?

2. Paragraph general structure

Maybe he had an English teacher you say that one paragraph should have a thesis statement at the beginning. This is partly true. Your thesis statement is the point you try to communicate, but he has a couple of optional location: beginning and end. You can start with the central idea, then build support internal and external or you can provide support and make your point. With all due respect to teachers of English, we have a strong preference for the second method, because it mimics the way of thinking.

During his period at the end of paragraph, you direct your reader through ideas to reach the conclusion. In Furthermore, the endpoint can be organized more effectively support internal and external. However, expressing the main idea behind is valid in some cases. With this method, you tell the reader, "Here point, and now I'll explain. "Basically, you must determine the method that works best for a particular paragraph. As target = "_blank"> our preference is that the second method, however, we we focus on that.

3. Detailed structure

a. The beginning of the paragraph: The pair of sentences in The first paragraph establishes its external support. External support connects the point with the context you're in the paragraph. You tell the reader: "This is how This paragraph is linked to what has been written by myself. "There are of course (ie it will connect to) the end of the preceding paragraph, which serves as a transition between ideas. Without this outside support, you do not have a smooth transition from the previous paragraph, is necessary to strengthen connection or paragraph is completely misplaced. (This is one of the most difficult to master writing, and for those they are writing essays, the one most often criticized by teachers.) Once you have established your external support, you must think in this case Topics to be discussed internally.

The first two sentences tell the reader: "Here is what this section are discussed." Using the earlier analogy, we present the leaves. These questions should lead the reader to the point of the paragraph. If they do, to register for another section. We do not recommend writing anything that resembles a list. Subtlety is better. In fact, these issues can be recognized by reading the entire paragraph.

b. The body of the paragraph: Once you have established your external assistance and questions internal expands on these topics. The main objective here is to show how these topics support the central idea. Each theme creates a path point of destination. In this perspective, you realize how each theme begins at or near the beginning of the paragraph and follow the final. Are not sequentially but are treated simultaneously. You should be able to identify certain words and phrases in each paragraph that relate to each topic, making a chain end to end. This chain of support to the whole paragraph is more useful, coherent and elegant – as well as economically and efficiently.

C. The end of the paragraph: "Holy Moley!" You might think so. "When will we finally make our point?" The answer is "now". If you've done all the above, you are ready to make your point of introducing the reader to the central idea that you want to express. And if done well, the focus should be logical sense to the reader. Because you have kept your central idea in the minds of all, end of your paragraph should naturally and logically as well as everything you wrote. You only need a sentence to convey his central idea. We follow a rule of two sentences: If you need more than two sentences to express the central idea, the revision and simplification. If you still can not do, then you might have to break your idea into smaller parts and write additional paragraphs. And this brings us to the last element of paragraph – paving the way for the next paragraph.

As you recall the discussion above, foreign assistance, need to connect paragraphs above and below. Thus, when the end of sentences in a paragraph, you must have a clear idea of where you were coming. What is the idea that, logically, what you just typed? At the end of a paragraph, give the reader an idea of what will follow. This is the basis for the transition between ideas, which is the same as the transition between paragraphs. This paragraph is now done, and you're ready to begin the next.

4. Summary of the above

Because we've covered much ground above we will provide a quick and dirty summary of what I wrote.

a. Paragraphs need to support internal and external.

b. Each paragraph must have one and only idea in the center.

C. The central idea is supported by one or more strings of matter.

d. Its' a sentence of paragraph (s) "should connect the whole paragraph together as a logical conclusion.

e. The end of a paragraph should lead the reader to the next idea.

5. Examples

a. Example A (a document on education children with special needs)

The term "disability" is composed of many conditions that can inhibit student learning (by eg visual and auditory cognitive processes slow, behavioral management). A student with disabilities often require specialized instructional strategies to reduce the extent to which these inhibitors may affect learning. Pupils with special needs require special teaching a highly skilled training and experience to meet these needs. In the process of selecting tutor, ATS identifies teachers who have unique skills, resulting in the possibility of linking students with special needs with the tutors who have sufficient capacity to teach. Teachers use different strategies to stimulate careful sequencing, monitoring and control of the learning process.

External support in the preceding paragraph: [The preceding paragraph concludes by stating that some students with disabilities affecting their ability to learn.] "The long-term disability" includes "

central point: the company teachers differentiate their instruction to maximize student learning. Note that this paragraph makes the point, but should not explicitly.

Channel 1: Conditions Point. This hypothesis is supported in words and sentences: disability, degree, inhibitors of these needs, special needs, differentiated

Item 2 of the chain: an education specialist. This hypothesis is supported by the words and sentences: strategies for special education, highly qualified teachers, selection, skills, teaching ability, teachers

External support in the following paragraph: "The teachers use strategies" [The following paragraph explains how to choose strategies.]

b. Example Two (Henry King, lines from Shakespeare, Henry V, Act 3, Scene 6)

Gloucester.

I hope that will not come on us today.

ENRIQUE.

We are in the hands of God, my brother, not hers.

Mars on the bridge, which now draws toward night.

Beyond the river, we return to camp

And tomorrow, give the fire.

External support in the preceding paragraph: "This is not in them."

Central Point: We will defeat them (the offer for up).

Channel Item 1: Schedule of events. This hypothesis is supported by the following words and phrases, which, tonight, tomorrow

Channel Item 2: Installation. This hypothesis is supported by the words and expressions following: in the hands of God, in his, to the bridge over the river, away

External support in the following paragraph: "to provide up. "[This is the end of the stage, and go. However, it refers to" them ", the French. The next scene opens in the French camp.]
