I own a 1973 Volkswagen beetle.The alternator warning light comes on when the head light is on high beam,why?

I am refering to the “g” warning light on the speedometer.It lights up very faintly when the head light is set to high beam.The warning light lights up more clearly when the headlight is in high beam with the acclerated depressed..

If you do not have any additional lights (non-standard) lights fitted to the car which is likely to increase the amperage of the lighting circuit, then your alternator is starting to fail. This could well be that it only requires new brushes.

If additional lights have been fitted, then the likelihood is that the current draw of the circuit is greater than what the alternator can supply, hence the warning light starts to glow,

Have you checked if the fan belt is not slipping, because this can also result in the phenomena that you are describing. Check the condition of the belt, even if it feels tight, check to see if the V of the belt is shiny and smooth. if this is the case then it is an indication that the belt has been slipping in the past. In this condition I would replace it, as it will slip under load (i.e. with bright lights on).
