Taking short walks in the Humboldt Redwoods State Park

This year, consider visiting the impressive Grand Humboldt Redwoods State Park offering the largest remaining stand of ancient redwoods in the world – over 17,000 hectares. It also houses some of the oldest trees in the coastal redwoods recorded, some of which are over 2,200 years.

I bet you did not know that an acre Humboldt Redwoods State Park was found to contain a greater density of the organic matter in the Amazon jungle – by Humboldt Redwoods Interpretive Association and others – actually, seven times more high.

The park is located 45 miles south of Eureka, California, 20 miles north of Garberville, accessible in all directions from the impressive Giant avenue, part of scenic stretches of California San Francisco Bay in Redwood National Park.

For more than 30 miles, the Avenue Giants through 51,222 acres of redwood forest in Humboldt Redwoods State Park pending.

Years of clear cutting redwoods

But to note – Avenue of the Giants, you will see not only the protection of high and beautiful redwoods looming, but also private land that is not registered logging. The contrast between these small trees of second growth and old redwood park is in full motion.

Many old sequoias were cut during the gold rush and after, like many Americans westward. In fact, nearly 95% of virgin redwoods that once covered the west coast of southern Oregon, near San Luis Obispo have disappeared.

These days, there is a strong movement to reduce significantly redwood ceiling and completely abolished the cut either some old growth redwoods remaining in the parks or reserves not. As you read this, environmental activists are probably living on trees to prevent the remaining unprotected virgin redwood forests logging.

Yes, today, only 5% of the original redwood forests, which is one reason see the redwoods Humboldt Redwoods State Park so special.

Swimming, hiking, canoeing, camping and more

Besides impressive redwood forests old shore, the park offers more than 100 miles of hiking trails, fishing, swimming and canoeing in the Eel River, cycling, horseback riding, seasonal interpretive programs, including nature walk and interviews conducted by park naturalist on a variety of topics such as ecology Forest animal tracking.

Instead of booking a hotel near the Avenue of the Giants, consider camping, usually idyllic this area since early May to early October. The park has developed camps, camps for the environment, horse camps, and fields of the road. Temperatures are soft, the heavy rains are unlikely, and you will find some insects. And you'll be among these magnificent trees.

Trails in the park can be long and o difficult in the short and easy, that I prefer. Here are my favorite tracks near the Avenue of the Giants, who each take one hour or less and offer gentle slopes:
Drury Chaney Road *-
Founder Grove loop trail *
Rockefeller Forest Loop Trail *
* Area of large trees, large trees, Giant Tree Flatiron trees and paths

You can get maps at the visitor center, open daily all year. See also the website Humboldt Redwoods State Park website for route maps and directions online.

Drury-Chaney Trail – My favorite

If you time for a trace in one of the redwood parks, hiking trails Drury Chaney. This is one of the most beautiful trails in the park, and a short distance Walking around one hour for the whole surface of time.
You can walk either straight or circular path, and each line is clearly defined.

Do not be fooled by a panel adjacent to the parking area to discuss second-growth forests. With large trees like these, it is not a forest has been recorded once. Rather, a party more beautiful and majestic growth redwoods in Humboldt virgin State Park.

Unlike many redwood forests, where trees block the light that makes the promotion of housing land of plenty, vigorous growth covers the floor of Drury, This makes the region particularly beautiful.

Several years ago, the Rangers finished doing all Drury Chaney path disabled. During winter, heavy rainfall can create a groove and a branch or two may fall, but usually people's arms strong enough to be able to wheels on the road smooth and without difficulty.

Founders Grove Loop Trail

This trail, named by the founders of the Save the Redwoods League, sometimes crowded, but still nice. Founders Grove is an area of large trees, especially including the founders of the tree, which is approximately 346 feet and height between 1300 and 1500.

You will see that the redwoods of Humboldt Redwoods State Coastal Park, as the founder of Grove, growing at altitudes lower along the rivers and streams in this case, the South Fork Eel River.
This walkway, called the Founders Grove nature trail can easily be walked less than 30 minutes.

Rockefeller Forest Loop Trail

Rockefeller Forest Loop Trail Area, the biggest forest in Humboldt Redwoods State Park was named after John D. Rockefeller, Jr., who gave $ 1 million in 1927 to preserve 10,000 acres of Redwood trees on this site.

The State has been slow – and the federal government, even slower – to protect these magnificent trees. Over the years, the network of parks developed primarily through donations from families, and garden clubs, conservation groups and not through small procurement. Therefore, We appreciate the Rockefellers and other great philanthropists, who have helped preserve our natural heritage.

The loop trail not Rockefeller as well as significant others, to stay in heavier tracks. But he knows he can not venture too far from the track, the loop is bounded by the river Eel, Bull Creek Road Mattoli.

Big Tree Area Trails

In the area of large trees, you have three walks 10 minutes to three trees.
* Top of Rockefeller Tree – circumference of 42 feet, height: 359 meters, measured in 1957.
* Giant Tree – Circle: 53 meters, height: 363 meters designated "Champion Coast Redwood" in 1991.
* Giant tree fell Flatiron – Address in diameter: 7.5 m in diameter a different direction: 17.5 feet fell in January 1995.

However, statistics can not capture what makes the redwoods Humboldt Redwoods State Park so impressive. The combination of size and age with a sense of grandeur and serenity – about the wisdom – if you ask me can be found elsewhere. (My mother called these forests their cathedrals.)

By sharing with you my favorite short rides, I think I offered a decoy can not refuse. I do not believe in spring? I can not help it. I traveled around the world, and nowhere more than that.
