Let’s face it, there are some people who are bitten by mosquitoes more often than others. And you will know that you are one of the few individuals whom these pesky bugs love to suck blood from if you see that you are the only one scratching from mosquito bites in your picnic or barbecue cookout.
According to experts, only one in ten people are considered by female mosquitoes as attractive and viable source of certain nutrients. It seems that some people have certain characteristics in their blood that make female mosquito eggs more fertile. By the way, you don’t have to worry about male mosquitoes; they are really not the biting type. Besides, they are not the ones carrying the eggs.

If one of your parents is a preferred female mosquito meal, then you are most likely a candidate for mosquito food pile yourself. Studies show that your genes make up 85% of your vulnerability to this bug’s bite. As mentioned earlier, there may be some characteristics in your blood that female mosquitoes think are helpful in making their eggs stronger and more fertile. However, scientists, up until now, are still looking more closely on this topic.
Presence Of Cholesterol And Steroids
Certain elements or substances in a person’s flesh or skin may also attract mosquitoes. An expert from University of Florida claims that the presence of huge amounts of cholesterol or steroids on the skin of an individual makes him or her a possible source for mosquito meal.
Attractive Scents
Other Entomology experts believe that mosquitoes are also magnetized by the smell of certain acids. In fact, people who are suffering from high concentrations of uric acid in their blood should not only be worried about arthritis and joint pains, but of mosquito bites as well. Another scent that lures these insects is carbon dioxide.
Fact is, mosquitoes can detect the smell of a prey who is about 50 meters away. Since adults emit much larger amount of carbon dioxide than children, they are more susceptible to being bitten by these little pests. Moreover, pregnant women should also be more careful when going outdoors because they too release more carbon dioxide, hence they are also more attractive to mosquitoes.
What To Do To Ward Off Mosquito Attacks?
Aside from wearing long and light colored clothing, you can avoid being bitten by mosquitoes by using insect repellants. However, it would be best to choose a product that is made from natural ingredients, especially for pregnant women, little children and other vulnerable individuals. Some chemical compositions of popular insect repellant brands may not be good for you.
Everybody should be more conscious in preventing mosquito bites because these insects can be carriers of serious illnesses. In fact, deadly mosquito-born illnesses, such as Dengue and West Nile, are becoming more common in the US.
Another problem that comes from mosquito bites is unsightly wounds. People who are prone to insect bites usually have a lot of tiny and ugly scars due to lesions caused by too much scratching of the skin.
