It is a multi-tool (eg Leatherman) a smart thing to pack on a backpacking trip to Europe?
I'm backpacking Europe this summer by myself for a couple of months. I will be riding trains around many countries and stay in shelters. Do you think I should pack my multi-tool? If what matters is Leatherman wave which weighs about 8 ounces. It has a knife, if it will create problems in the security controls when I'm traveling across borders or anything like that. It seems that could be very useful, but then I keep reading the recommendations to pack light. I've never backpacking around before, so I have no idea. Thanks!
I would not take a Leatherman, too heavy and not having enough. And if you keep it in you or in your hand luggage when you go on a plane that will be left behind. In the past I took a knife cheapish, especially now travel without a big knife, for what reason. Security on aircraft and ferries. I carry a small knife, about 4 cm (1 1 / 2 ") and have had no problems with that, but it is not allowed on an airplane.
