Hiking trip this summer I need?

In summarizing some friends this summer for a week long walk / camping at Allegheny National Forest. I've been looking for the most part, but do not know the brand well, or really what is needed for a trip of several days in desert. In addition to a tent and good shoes, what are the essential elements needed? Thank you.
