First aid kit for pets

First, know what is normal. It is important to be able to evaluate the physical condition of pet in order to assess their needs, especially since many animals are stoic and will not show pain or discomfort. One of the most important factors in assessing the condition of your pet is knowing what is normal for him or her. Take time before an emergency check your pet's normal temperature, pulse, color and breathing.

To take the temperature of your pet, use a rectal thermometer. Put some lubricant on the tip (Vaseline, oil, etc.) Carefully insert the thermometer about 1 inch into the rectum. Keep the thermometer in place for 60 seconds, then remove and read the temperature. Most dogs and cats have temperatures between 101 and 102 degrees F.

To check the pulse, which often can feel the heartbeat by placing his hand on his chest ahead the front legs, or feel the pulse on the inside of the upper back leg. The color of the animal can be assessed by examining the gums or tongue, and breathing rate usually can be seen looking at the chest.

Hemostats or pliers – (used to remove thorns or a clamp). Hemostats are as fine or vise grips clamps. They are great for catching things like sticks, thorns, ticks, or anything else that may be caught in your pet's mouth or skin.

Thermometer – (normal temperature in dogs and cats is 101 to 102 degrees F). A low temperature can indicate a very sick animal or hypothermia. In any case, it is very important to warm the animal. A high temperature may indicate infection or hyperthermia. Temperatures above 106 or 107 degrees can cause brain damage to your pet.

Styptic powder – This is very useful to stop bleeding caused by broken nails.

dressing material – A variety of dressing materials can be used to cover wounds to keep them clean, to provide pressure to help stop bleeding, to cover an injured area so your pet does not lick or scratch on it, to act as a temporary tourniquet or mouth (even docile animals will adjust drive if in pain), or to stabilize or protect a body part.

* 1 roll cast padding or soft bandage
* 1 roll of adhesive tape or sticky bandage
* 1 roll "Vet Wrap"
* Squares Chiffon
* 1 roll gauze (can be used for tourniquet, muzzle)

Artificial tears (To soothe or flush eyes). You care can use your hemostats to remove sticks or other foreign objects from entering the eyes of your pet.

It can help relieve discomfort your pet if injured. Not all dogs should take aspirin. The dogs can usually take aspirin every 8-12 hours. Cats are very sensitive to aspirin and should never be given aspirin more than once every 72 hours. Tylenol is poisonous to cats. Consult your veterinarian before administering any medication.
