Walking For Creativity And Inspiration
INSPIRATION Do you remember this ditty? Can’t think brain dumb, inspiration won’t come Can’t write, bum pen, that’s all AMEN.
When one is paid to come up with creative ideas and concepts, the luxury of a numb brain does not cut the mustard. Unless you’re inventing the “Numb Brain” diet, because there will certainly be far less money for groceries. I use walking as a creative tool. If the morning walk or hike does not get the ideas flowing, I walk to the bank (always an inspiration), to the farmer’s market, to the mailbox.
Today, for example, I needed to come up with a concept for a thirty-second TV commercial to “Explain to America how a carbon cap will solve our oil addiction,” Ugh. Getting a handle around that one is a tall order for this writer’s noodle. So, I laced up my hiking boots and headed to a pristine hiking trail on nearby wetlands. About 3 miles in nothing much was coming; I was more interested in the crunch of my feet over the dirt and leaves than carbon pollution.
Then I looked up and noticed that the low tide had created a veritable feeding Mecca for the birds. There were at least 300 ducks, geese, egrets and most especially, scores of baby egrets whose parents were teaching them to fish. They would imitate mom (or in all fairness, it might have been dad), as she elongated her delicate neck and nabbed a fish, which she then flipped up and gulped down. The youngsters stayed close to the shallow shore and managed to snag a few minnows, though quite a few popped out of their mouths and fell back into the water, momentarily spared. Need I say images of carbon emissions began rolling around in my brain as nasty terrorists in a world of bucolic harmony? Truly, this haven I visited today exists scant miles from the freeway, and that freeway was expelling fumes that could endanger the babies, innocently playing in the lagoon. Not to mention babies of the human sort. I HAD IT!
Now I had to hike back out and get the camera and seize the moment. The 3 miles out were a heck of a lot faster than the 3 in. Would the light be the same, would the water still ripple when the birds did their dance, could I capture the moment?
Then I realized I already had it captured – forever – in my mind. I could recall it at any moment and use words that I felt at that moment, and they would be the foundation for my concept, a concept that America could relate to. I am blessed that my feet and my brain work so well together. And that I can WALK!

54 Sassafras Whistle Adult Hiking and Walking Stick $33.95 A shrill whistle is carved into the top of the Sassafras Whistle Stick. Profile: We are one of the largest suppliers of hiking and walking sticks in the U.S., and we have been in the stick business since 1985. Best selling of all of our sticks is the rustic Hickory hiking stick, famous for its strength and durability. Whistle Creek makes sticks like grandpa would have made. These are products that you would be proud to display in your home, yet not hesitate to use on the trail every day. We have avoided going to aluminum poles (lightning rods) or other mass-manufactured techniques. We have stayed with time-tested traditional methods that have been around since before Moses. Each Whistle Creek product is hand crafted from wood in the U.S. by skilled craftsmen who value the importance of a sturdy friend on the trail. Whether you use your stick for arduous mountain treks, strolls in the forest or just for wandering ’round the block, you will soon benefit from the comfort and security that a good walking stick can bring to your outings. Hopefully you will decide to collect all of our sticks for you and your family to use for generations. What Size Stick is for Me? Hiking sticks should be 6 to 9 above your elbow to help you get down a hill (you need to reach). Walking sticks and canes are different. First, place your arm to your side with the elbow slightly bent. The top of the handle on the stick should be at the break in your wrist. All of Whistle Creek’s sticks can be shortened by removing the rubber tip, sawing off what is not needed and then replacing the tip. Orthopedic patients should consult their physician. |
